Lakefront Brewery is releasing retro Riverwest Stein, packaged with its original 1987 logo

Riverwest Stein is going retro this summer, with a limited release of Riverwest Stein in its original 1987 packaging.

The packaging pays homage to Lakefront Brewery's first beer and its 38 years as a Milwaukee staple.

The image on the can was drawn by an artist who went by "Peggy Riverwest," according to a news release from Lakefront Brewery. She made a line drawing of a photo taken by Lakefront co-founder Jim Klisch of what he said was a "quintessential street view of Riverwest," looking east down East Clarke Street with St. Casimir Church in the background.

Lakefront used the sketch on table tents at Riverwest Stein's release party on Dec. 2, 1987, at Gordon Park Pub, 2778 N. Weil St., where Nessun Dorma is today.

In 1990 Linda Goehre, a Klisch family friend, used the sketch to design labels that went on the first bottled Riverwest Stein.

Lakefront owner Russ Klisch told the Journal Sentinel the retro branding was a fun way to boost the brand ahead of summer.
